Profile
Hi! My name is Heather Hawkins. Since 2005 I have had the pleasure of teaching kindergarten, first, second, and third grade at AES and AIS. Since 2022 I have had the honor of serving as our Foundational Interventionalist. As our Foundational Interventionist, I specialize in supporting AIS students with reading, phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. I mostly work with small groups addressing specific reading needs.
I have been living in Maryville, Tennesee since 2002. I grew up in Marietta, Georgia, and moved here to attend Maryville College. I liked this area so much, I decided to stay after I graduated. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to start my teaching career at Alcoa directly after graduating.
I have always had a passion for teaching students how to read and to enjoy reading. I have done extensive research on the Orton-Gillingham Approach to phonics and decoding. I am excited to continue working with your students and share my love of reading.
