Profile

Hi! My name is Heather Hawkins. Since 2005, I have had the pleasure of teaching kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade at both AES and AIS. Since 2022, I have had the honor of serving AIS as our Foundational Interventionist. As a Foundational Interventionist, I specialize in supporting AIS students in reading, phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. I primarily work with small groups to address specific reading needs.

I have been living in Maryville, Tennessee, since 2002. I grew up in Marietta, Georgia, and moved here to attend Maryville College. I liked this area so much that I decided to stay after I graduated. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to start my teaching career at Alcoa directly after graduating.

I have always had a passion for teaching students how to read. Through my career, I have done extensive research on the Orton-Gillingham Approach to phonics and decoding. I am excited to continue working with your students and share my love of reading.
