AIS Art

My name is David M. Grant and I am the art teacher at AIS and I have been teaching since 2005.  I love what I do and love the school I am at.  Welcome to my page!

Communication and Sharing Art:  Most parents are unable to visit and see the art displayed in the school building, so what I have chosen to do is to display student art and share what we are working on in art class through photos and short write ups on ClassDojo.   Although I share a lot on ClassDojo I may not immediately respond if contacting me through ClassDojo due to the massive amount of messages from being connected to every class in the school. Feel free to contact me through my school email, if I am not responding quick enough. [email protected]

My Goals as a Teacher:

I spend half of the normal school day at AIS using my reading degree to teach or support literacy and the other half using my art degree to teach art. I love what I do! I believe the art mindset (the practice of being innovative and creative), and the art skillset (problem solving, presenting yourself, fine motor skills, artistic awareness) are essential 21st century skills that apply to any job related field. I make natural connections to the school-wide reading curriculum, CKLA, and try to be present and adaptive enough to connect with what engages students in learning.

I am always looking for ways to enrich these students experiences and understanding of the arts, literacy, and how art relates to the things they love in their everyday life.

To simplify the Tennessee State Art Standards, I work at guiding students to be able to:

1. Talk like an artist:  To be able to critique themselves and each other using art vocabulary terms.  To develop a visual vocabulary and communicate using art.
2. See like an artist:   Teach students to observe life through the lenses of various artists, and become more aware of reality (like artists do), and their own perspectives.
3. Work like an artist:  To develop a visual vocabulary through practicing artistic fine motor skills, communicate using art, and to have new experiences with new materials.  There is SO much development when we focus on the PROCESS of art creation (over just the final product).
